What Equipment Do You Need for Trail Running?
Well Prepared for Your Adventures in the Hochkönig Region
All you need for running is a pair of shoes. At least, that sounds simple and appealing. But as soon as a run turns into a longer adventure on the trails, the weather, terrain, nutrition and safety all become important factors. You do not need a full range of professional equipment from the start. However, a few carefully selected essentials will help you feel safer, more relaxed and enjoy every step of the way.
Here you can find out which equipment to take with you on your trail running adventures in the Hochkönig region.

Die richtigen Trailrunningschuhe
Your shoes are your direct connection to the ground. The right tread provides grip and helps you stay in control on wet roots, loose gravel and steep trails.
The best shoe for you depends on the terrain and the length of your run:
-Deeper lugs provide grip on soft and muddy trails
-A grippy outsole supports you on loose rock and technical sections
-Good cushioning is ideal for longer, more runnable routes
-A more responsive shoe gives you a better feel for challenging terrain
Your shoes should fit comfortably and be broken in before longer runs.
Remember:
👉 The most expensive shoe is not automatically the best. What matters most is the fit, the terrain and how the shoe feels when you run.

Kleidung nach dem Zwiebelprinzip
The weather in the mountains can change quickly. Sunshine in the valley does not automatically mean pleasant conditions at the summit or on an exposed ridge.
That is why the layering system has proven so effective:
- -A close fitting base layer wicks moisture away
- -An insulating layer protects you from getting cold
- -A lightweight jacket protects you from wind and rain
Adapt your clothing to the altitude, the duration of your run and the weather forecast. On longer runs, always carry a rain jacket and an additional insulating layer in your trail running vest.

Trailrunningstöcke richtig verwenden
Poles can support you on long, steep climbs. They reduce the strain on your legs and help you maintain a steady rhythm. However, only use them once you have practised the correct technique. You should also be able to stow them away quickly and easily. A pole quiver or an easily accessible attachment on your trail running vest prevents the poles from getting in the way while you run.

Verpflegung und Energie
Energy consumption on trails is often higher than expected. Climbs, technical sections and longer running times place additional demands on your body. Drink regularly and start refuelling early on longer runs. Do not wait until you feel very hungry or thirsty. Only take products that you have already tested during training and know you can tolerate well. Small portions that are easy to carry and eat on the move are ideal. It is also advisable to pack a little extra in case your run takes longer than planned.
Strengthen your legs and core, and improve your balance
A trail running vest provides space for water, food, clothing, and your emergency equipment. It should fit comfortably and allow you to move freely while running.
Depending on the route, weather, and time of year, we recommend:
- Sufficient water
- Energy-rich food
- Rain jacket and insulating layer
- Emergency blanket
- Small first aid kit
- Mobile phone
- Offline saved routes
- Personal medication
- Gloves and a headband, if needed
- Some toilet paper
Your equipment should match your planned route. For a short run in the valley, you will need less than for a route lasting several hours in alpine terrain.
Important:
An emergency blanket and a small first aid kit take up very little space, but can make a crucial difference in an emergency.

Better equipped, better running.
The right equipment should not weigh you down, but give you confidence and peace of mind. When your shoes, clothing, and trail running vest work well together, you can focus on what makes trail running so special: movement, nature, and the feeling of freedom. Prepare carefully and always adapt your equipment to the planned route and current conditions.
“Shoes are enough for the first step. For everything that follows, it pays to be prepared.”
